I want to start self-hosting more of my own data and services, and stop using services that really don’t serve me well at all.
Starting with X/Twitter. The platform doesn’t really accurately reflect my industry or real life, and it doesn’t ever serve me well to spend much time on it anyway. It’s a bit of a cesspit, to be honest.
I’d rather spend my time in my RSS feed reader, reading articles from people who interest me, on topics that I actually want to read about, rather than being served the latest rage bait by an algorithm. Or tweets/posts from people who don’t really say anything at all, but are just trying to farm “engagement”.
In addition, I rarely spend much time on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, so culling those won’t be a problem. Reddit could be an issue though.
Next, I’ll move on to Google Photos. I love the idea of hosting my own instance of Immich and storing all of my own photos. I’ve got a lifetime of photos stored in Google Photos, and I don’t like the idea that I could potentially lose access to them at any time.
Beyond that, who knows. I might start hosting my own media and try cancelling some subscriptions I don’t really need. Either way, it’ll be a good learning opportunity at the very least.
