I wrote previously about escaping up with Big Tech. When it comes to X don’t get me wrong, for certain things it’s been great. Memes, sports news and alike. But for my industry which is technology it’s just pretty toxic. Arguments, hot takes, ‘not gunna make it’ posts and bot after bot after bot. It’s not really a place where you learn much, or engage. It’s become a platform for outrage and self promotion.
My problem was, because of how the algorithm works I can’t have all of the good without all of the bad. It’s all combined in the same feed, presented to me by the same algorithm.
So, I decided to move to Mastodon. Peoples posts are much more balanced, less dramatised and more informative. I’m pretty selective about who I follow and I know that they are actual people rather than faceless accounts or bots. As for the accounts I miss from X such as sports journalists etc, they usually have mirror accounts that crosspost their content to Mastodon so I still get all those too.
Overall, it’s less toxic, more pleasant and it’s definitely more sociable. Instances seem to be moderated sensibly (from my experience anyway). I’m sure it has its problems but I haven’t seen many of them so far.
Admittedly I don’t know a tonne about the Fediverse, so that side of things I’m interested in learning more about as well.
I don’t miss X.
